The primary objective of the alliance was to ensure the safety and security of web users and to protect their privacy. There was Apple Computer, AT&T, AWS Convergence Technologies, Inc., Boeing, Cendant, Dell, DoubleClick Inc., eBay Inc., EDS, Intuit, Microsoft, Nestlé, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Time Warner Inc., Verizon Communications, The Walt Disney Company, WhenU and Zango. Some associations that became members were American Advertising Federation, Association for Competitive Technology, Business Software Alliance, Association of National Advertisers, American Association of Advertising Agencies, Information Technology Association of America, Internet Alliance, Motion Picture Association of America, Online Publishers Association, TRUSTe and The United States Chamber of Commerce.
From more than eighty members during its nascent phase to less than thirty in no time and ceasing to have any influence or exist today, the fate of Online Privacy Alliance tells you one thing. That the companies in the world that store and collect consumer data, all ecommerce majors and smaller players, every website that tracks cookies, are unwilling to come together to ensure that you, the end web user, is safe or protected. The failure to have a global or standardized practice simply reiterates that internet privacy is a large loophole that every company is trying to exploit and explore to their best interests in their own way.
